So, just about 10 years ago, Trillingstar went around randomly pairing up different icons in her collection for what was called "The Crossovers of Guh meme". One of these pairings was Malcolm Reynolds of 'Firefly' and Ryan O'Reily of 'OZ'. Never having met a rare pair that I didn't like, I jumped at the challenge to write the couple, beginning with How Ryan O'Reily Escaped from Oz, Trillingstar jumped in with Breaking Atmosphere. These were followed by You Always Wanted to Travel and In Limbo. Trillingstar has made the most recent contribution to this series in 2018 with The Haunting of Ryan O'Reily. Flash forward to today and this way-beyond-a-drabble came into my head as I was looking for an entry for Femslash February. As always, anyone is welcome to jump aboard and contribute to this 'verse wherever they see fit.

Enough of the drabble-length author's note. Here's the fic:

BEEN A WHILE

“It's been a while,” River said to no one in particular.

Jayne and Mal exchanged a glance between them because it had been awhile since the Reader had said anything so out of the blue. A silent conversation slash staring contest went on between them as to which one of them was going to ask the next question. Mal lost and had opened his mouth to speak when Zoe slammed her cup down on the table and walked out.

Oh, he thought, watching Zoe leave.

“You probably shouldn't have done that, River,” Mal said as he followed his first mate out the door.

“What was that about, Moonbrain?” Jayne asked.

“Trying to help,” said River.

“Got the creepiest way of helping I ever seen.”

“Not trying to help you.”

“Good. And don't start.”

Mal went in search of Zoe. He found her standing on the bridge, staring out into the Black. “You okay?”

“Yeah.”

“Can I help?”

She let out a little laugh. He came closer to her and laid a hand on her arm.

“Is this about the other day?” he asked.

“I don't want to talk about it.”

“I shouldn't have done it. It was too soon. Can we go back to just being friends? Fellow crew members? Acquaintances on the same ship?”

“Been with you too long for any of that, Mal.” She met his eyes in their reflection in the glass.

“What do you want?” he whispered.

“I want this feeling to go away.”

“You don't have nothing to feel guilty for. If Wash was here, nothing would have happened.”

“I don't feel guilty.”

“What do you feel?”

“Nervous. I don't know how to be around you anymore.”

“It was one kiss.”

“And I want there to be more than that!” she yelled, finally turning toward him.

He was moving before either one of them could say anything to ruin it, pulling her into his arms, pressing his lips against hers.

“It's been a while,” she whispered.

He smiled, lacing her fingers with his own and walking hand in hand with her to his bunk. “I'm sure it'll come back to you.”

I gathered up a bunch of femslash prompts today and hope to be working my way through them throughout the month. (If you want a random one, just comment that you do and I'll pass one along)

PERFECT

When she is on the job, Inara has to be perfect. Every word she speaks comes from years of training and diplomacy. Her clothing is impeccable, her makeup flawless, never a hair out of place. Her movements are graceful and assured- whether she is pouring tea, dancing a waltz, or removing someone’s clothing before lovemaking.

Inara is always grateful to take the shuttle back to Serenity. As soon as the shuttle docks, she finds her way into the engine room. Kaylee is there, wearing sweatpants and a tee shirt, a lock of hair hanging in front of her face, grease stains on her forehead. The younger woman breaks into a smile, genuine and perfect in its imperfection. “Inara!” she exclaims, starting to move toward her, then stopping abruptly. “Let me get cleaned up.”

“You’re perfect,” says Inara, pulling her into a kiss.

If you're in the mood for some well-written femmeslash, be sure to check out The Sea Inside by jenwryn. It's a crossover of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly" with the pairing of Dawn/Kaylee and is set in the Firefly-verse. I loved the imagery and the way that Dawn interacts with other members of the crew. It's not a long story and the author manages to convey the growth of Dawn and Kaylee's relationship in just under 1200 words. If you like the characters, be sure to take a few minutes to read this.

I'm in the mood to do a little comment ficcage, so give me a character or pairing/fandom/prompt word and we'll see what I can come up with.
