Challenge #7

Create your own challenge.

Take some time, turn off social media and the news if you can, and engage in some creative play outside your usual medium. You can draw, knit, collage, cook, make up an interpretive dance, write, sing, play an instrument, take photographs, do woodworking, make a pillow & blanket fort, etc.

For myself, I write a lot, so I'd like to do something more in line with the visual arts. See what you can come up with and post a link to your creation if you feel like.

Challenge #5

In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love.

I chose a few different fandoms.

OZ - The alliance of Kareem Said & Simon Adebisi - The two couldn't be any different, yet their underlying goal is very similar. The season 4a arc of their relationship is one of the strongest of the series and echoes through season 4b as Said needs to learn to live with his inner Adebisi.

OZ - Beecher's revenge arc - What else is a guy to do after his arms and legs are broken? The systematic revenge after the attack at the end of season 2 is incredibly satisfying and shows us a darkness inside of Beecher that he hadn't been capable of at the outset of the series.

Prodigal Son - The idea that both Dani and Malcolm were "saved by" Gil links them in ways that the job does not.

L.A. Confidential - Ed & Bud getting around to working the case together. It takes a while, but it's canon and it makes a great springing off point for future post-movie fics.

Justified - Raylan and Art knowing each other from Glynco. I like that their relationship has been established before the show even begins. I choose to look at it as "what happened at Glynco, stays at Glynco (until, of course, it doesn't)"

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Tara finding family of choice with the Scoobies is one of the nicest part of the series and never fails to make me smile and cry at the same time.

Challenge #4

In your own space, create some goals

I did a bit of this over at LJ at the beginning of the year, but here they are:

My two annual resolutions:
1. Be more kind
2. Write more

On the writing front:
1. Have more general check-ins and random observations (and maybe even cross-post a few of those to DW) - this was something I did at least once a day when I started out, but lately it's dwindled to once a month or every few months
2. Working on the hardtime100 prompts that I've missed. (I'm the prompter, so I really should do better at this)
3. More consistent writing - February generally gets a bump with [community profile] halfamoon and Femslash February, and November has NaNoWriMo, but the other months are all over the place. I'd like to write something or contribute to my WIP every day. My writing goal is 125,000 for the year which puts me somewhere around 6500 per month (excluding NaNo)
4. Write longer pieces - drabbles are well and good, but sometimes I want to develop something further.

Fandom things:
1. Find some new fandoms - "Clarice" might be good and "Resident Alien" looks like fun. And there's always finishing at least the first season of "The Wire"
2. Continue transferring my works to Ao3.
3. Engage better. Offer feedback and respond to feedback I've been given.

That feels pretty ambitious. If I make a few of these I'll be happy. We'll see how the year goes.

Hi. I'm Cat. I'm rarely here, usually on LJ. If you scroll down a couple of entries, you can see where I did this post last year. Not a lot has changed.

Fandom-wise- HBO's OZ is the biggest one for me still. I maintain the hardtime100 community over at LJ and post drabble challenges 2x a month and long-fic challenges less regularly (used to be monthly, but this year switching over to quarterly). Prodigal Son is my newest, shiniest fandom and I'm really looking forward to the new season starting in a week. The Jossverse is represented with Buffy, Firefly, and occasionally Angel. Game of Thrones is another that shows up regularly and other fandoms make an appearance from time to time. Most of my work is on LJ, but I am migrating the older fics gradually to Ao3 and will try to pop in links to my stuff here this year.

Writing-wise- My style is fairly economical. That comes from years of screenwriting (nothing really made, although if you lived in Chicago during the early 90s, you might have seen some of my stuff on the cable access soap "Behind the Screen" that I wrote for in college). So what I write is mostly dialogue. Fluffy descriptions generally happen in someone else's work. I have done NaNo and usually by the end of November, I'm sick of what I wrote and jonesing for something different. I write a lot of slash & femslash so if you're not a fan of those, my work may not be for you.

Other- I started a new job last January which has been very good for me. I'm able to come home and not be mentally exhausted. I'm also able to read/write during downtime so that's lent itself to some good results. I'm a big fan of hockey (go Blues!) and am looking forward to the season starting, even though it, like everything else is going to be weird this year.

Thanks for reading. I'm going to try to be around more this year so if you feel like adding me to your circle, please do so.

So... about a month ago, I ran a weekend challenge for the community at [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words with prompts I found on the Twitter hashtag hockeyporn. Hockey can be a very suggestive sport filled with double entendres. But last night, Chris Tanev came out with this during an interview when asked how his team would celebrate their victory while being in the quarantine bubble-

"I'm sure we can think of a few things after we get undressed."

Gold. Pure gold. Take it, love on it, do with it what you will. (And if you write something, come back here and let me know)

I snagged this over at DW. It looks like fun.

1. Be Careful What You Wish For - What you think you want isn't always what's good for you.
2. Forbidden Fruit - Whether the literal poison apple or a temptation that's just too enticing to resist no matter how glaring the warning signs.
3. Impossible Task - Our protagonist is tasked to surmount the seemingly insurmountable, against all odds.
4. The Girl in the Tower - She's trapped out of reach and far away, and might be longing for rescue or escape.
5. I Know Your True Name - Names have power, and knowing someone's true name can mean control over them, or a bond that cannot be broken, whether for good or bad.
6. Knight in Shining Armor - A hero/ine to save the day.
7. Liminal Time - The time in-between, when people or places or things are in the process of changing from one state of being to another. Danger and magic lurk here.
8. Beauty and the Beast - A beauty to tame the beast, who may not be what they appear.
9. True Love's Kiss - The power of true love can overcome all trials and tribulations.
10. Threshold Guardians - Not necessarily an adversary or obstacle, but a being who prepares our protagonist for the adventure ahead, whether through assistance or a test of resolve.
11. The Evil Queen - Queen, matriarch, or wicked witch, but is she bad to the bone or just misunderstood?
12. The Trickster - The clever fox who breaks the rules and enjoys the chaos caused.
13. The Tiger and the Dragon - Sparks fly between two spirits who are opposites yet linked together by destiny.
14. The Granter of Wishes - A jinn or fairy godmother with motives sometimes pure, sometimes not.
15. Into the Woods - A wild, dark place of some kind must be traversed before our protagonist can find resolution.

Well, it's been a little eventful in the world in the past week or so. I am working on adjusting to the current normal, knowing it might change any day now. The biggest adjustment has been with church- since gatherings over 10 people are not recommended, church has essentially shut down, which means no services and no choir practice until May at least.

Hockey has been done for a week. I haven't started walking into walls yet, but it's only a matter or time. On the bright side, if they decide to suspend everything including the playoffs, the Blues will be the reigning Stanley Cup Champions for another season.

I'm still going into the office. We're in the service industry so heaven forbid someone's heat or a/c goes out while they are practicing their social distancing while being cooped up with the kids. I am asking if they've been requested to self-quarantine, because I'm not sending any of our techs into those situations. (My main worry is when the two owners get back from Florida next week. They're pretty good about maintaining distance).

I'm organizing a write-in/gathering of sorts at [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words on Saturday. You can find the details here. It'll be good for me because even without going out, I have not been using the time to write, so that needs to happen.

Also, someone posted about the Comfort Challenge at [livejournal.com profile] story_works and I thought it looked interesting.

Hope you all are doing okay despite the weirdness. We'll get through this.

If you have something you're itching to write, feel free to join me today for a few word wars starting around 1pm CST. I'll be running them here at the [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words community so pop on by and enjoy some friendly competition in the spirit of writing.

And if you write OZ and are looking for prompts, check out [livejournal.com profile] hardtime100. ;)

Day 12

In your own space, create your own challenge.

Since I want to be held a little accountable, I'm posting here instead of to my DW journal. I'm challenging myself (and anyone else who has a "drawer novel") to take the time to work on a second draft. No rushing around to squeeze in 50K into a month, just a leisurely hour or two every so often to make that first draft better and to possibly get a wee bit closer to publishing.

OZ prompts

Things seem to have gotten rather stagnant in our little OZ community. I think people will be all-in for Magi again this year, but everything else seems to have stalled. I have a tiny idea that's been flitting around the corners of my mind for ages- writing prompts based on a particular season, be they a character, a moment, or a quote.

If anyone wants to join in, just leave me a comment with a particular season, and if you want to write for a major character, a minor character, a moment, a quote or any combination of the above and I'll respond with something.

No minimum max word or image count. No deadlines. You can write for one prompt or for all the prompts. No pressure. This is just for fun.

Example: Season 1
Major Character: Ryan O'Reily
Minor Character: Huseni Mershah
Moment: Alvarez loses his baby
Quote: "God comes to visit me every one in a while, actually he comes more often than I'd like. But he's God. What can I say? That I'm busy, that I'm in the shower... He knows."

A million-and-one Beecher/Keller-centric songs and not one for my OTP.

Yet.

Have to keep looking. The words are out there somewhere, I just know it.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, the information you need is here.

Jump in and take part!

Fellow Ozzites! Get thee over to [livejournal.com profile] oz_magi to make a wish claim. I just looked at the list and there are some fantastic prompts this year. They run the range from Beecher/Keller to Kathy Stabler/Genevieve Beecher and fairytale AUs and Jossverse crossovers and even a choose-your-own-rarepair prompt. Can't wait to see what this year will turn out!
