Tonight as I was walking to the neighborhood market (1 of 2), the light hit the mountains making them this really nicely defined shade of reddish brown. It looked like something that you'd see in a painting. Every time I see those mountains, which is becoming less and less frequent due to development in the area, I am so grateful to be living in Southern California. I grew up in the Midwest which had plains and rivers basically. Out here I have the ocean (on those extremely rare occasions that I choose to see it), the desert, the mountains, and what seems like every kind of tree available. I love palm trees by the way. Not much for the palm rats though - they do not replace squirrels.
On the way back from market #1, after buying the usual staple items (tomato paste, frozen veggies, cereal, cup of soup, Pop tarts, and turkey dogs), I was greeted by the strangest most intense sunset that I've seen in a long time. The sun was out of view, but right on the horizon, the sky was a brilliant shade of red, off to the northwest were strips of grey-blue clouds, and then just above the red was some pastel yellow and a shade that I can only describe as an over-dyed Easter egg. If you've ever dipped an Easter egg in every shade of dye, that's the color that would remain.
I think that's the nice thing about walking, being able to see and enjoy seeing things that you might miss otherwise. On the bus, I generally have my nose in a book or am working intensely on a piece of writing, so I don't miss it. And in a car, I'm too busy yelling at the other drivers for anything like "You son-of-a...Ooh, pretty sunset." I still miss a lot on my walks though. They put up a new motel in my neighborhood which I walked past consistently for a month before noticing it.
Speaking of noticing things, the billboard for "Justice" is terrible. Or my eyesight is terrible or the vantage point is terrible. I noted yesterday that I didn't know who the other women in the picture were. Apparently one of the "women" in the picture was not a woman at all but Kerr Smith (from "Dawson's Creek"). Oops. Note to Kerr, maybe a haircut is in order. I loved "Dawson's Creek" when it was on. It would be weird looking at the fanfic communities for that - not sure how to reconcile that with my Oz thing. Of course when everybody else was doing Dawson/Pacey, I'd probably be writing about Drue (which apparently I wouldn't know how to spell correctly even though he was the most interesting character in the series.) "Cinderella Story" where Pacey kisses Joey for the first official time was my favorite episode. That's where the show peaked.. I have that on a tape somewhere. Along with a few "Buffy" episodes, and for you BTVS folks - seriously - Oz/Giles. That's just about the sickest thing you could come up with. This is what I ran into in my search for Oz communities. Sick, sick people.
And on that note, there's a Bellinger thing that I was playing with earlier that will be in the next post.
So it wasn't all on topic with the title, but the train of thought kept running throughout - well, except for this moment, anyway.

Date: 2006-08-23 09:44 am (UTC)Ok, THIS is weird...because I was walking to the liquor store (to get *milk*) at probably the same time you saw that because I saw the exact same thing...the sun was already down but the horizon was glowing red. I thought it was so beautiful I wanted to take a pic, but my damn cell phone was all I had and it didn't register the beautiful color. Wow, and as I stood looking at it, with my dog staring at me thinking "Come ON already!" I thought, "You know, I wonder if anyone else actually pays attention to things like this anymore..." ...and I find out someone actually DOES. =o) I'm SoCal too, btw, which is why this is weird. ;o)

Date: 2006-08-24 05:37 am (UTC)So now I'm curious, where does the "detroit" in "colleendetroit" come from?
Please don't say you're a Red Wings fan. Please don't say you're a Red Wings fan. Please don't say you're a Red Wings fan. ::clicking heels together three times::

Date: 2006-08-24 08:10 am (UTC)SoCal born and raised...I'm the last white girl in the barrio. LOL
Long story short, the "Detroit" is from "Guys and Dolls" with the character, Nathan Detroit. Nothing beyond that...I've never even been to Detroit. ;o)

...good ol' reliable Colleen, Colleen, Colleen, colleendetroit
(End music)
My show tune vibe totally just kicked in. "Guys and Dolls" is one of my favorite musicals. I used to watch the movie every time it was on cable. I was surprised one time when watching one of those "Broadway's Hidden Treasures" shows (yes, I am that geeky) to see that J.K. Simmons was in the musical on Broadway. Very strange to see Vern Schillinger in those terms.
