Fandom: Departed

Character/Pairing: Billy/Sean, anniversary

Prompt: Dinner out.

A/N: By request, this takes place in [livejournal.com profile] revelininsanity's Running on Sand 'verse. For any of you who haven't read it yet, it starts here.

It’s closing in on Thanksgiving. Billy stares out the kitchen window, watching the dry brown leaves of the tree outside rustle against each other in the breeze.

“Get your coat. We’re going out for dinner,” Sean barked out the order.

Billy shrugged. He’d checked the calendar six times today and there was nothing listed on it. He’d gotten in the habit of writing down important dates – Sophie’s birthday, his wedding anniversary, Sean’s birthday, even though he never wanted to celebrate it.

Jean wandered through the door of their place. Billy drew her aside. “Is there something I’m missing here?”

“Go and have a good time,” laughed Jean, kissing his cheek, before Sophie pulled her into the living room.

When Sean pulled up outside the convenience store, Billy frowned. Maybe he had blown everything out of proportion and this was just a job. He grabbed his cane and followed Sean into the store.

As he walked in, Billy was assailed by the smell of curry. He noticed the restaurant off to the side – its plastic tables and benches in bright colors, empty except for the older man behind the counter.

The older man – Amam Singh - greeted Sean by name and asked after Sophie. Billy realized that this was the place where Sean got those doughnuts that Sophie liked so much. He’d brought takeout back to the station from here a time or two as well, so despite the appearance, Billy knew the food was pretty good.

Sean steered Billy into a booth and ordered for the two of them. Billy didn’t mind – it was one less thing for him to have to keep track of, and by now Sean knew his tastes pretty well. One thing was still unsettling him, however, and he had to ask.

“Sean, is there a reason that we’re sitting in an Indian restaurant on a Tuesday night?” They weren’t scheduled to touch base with Ross for another day or two, and she wouldn’t come all the way out here anyway.

“It’s kind of a big day for me. For you too, actually.”

Billy frowned. Fucking memory. Times like this he wished he could corner Sullivan in a room with no windows. “Why is it important?”

“Because a year ago today, you told me to shut the fuck up.”

Billy grinned. “I told you that last week. Are we going to be celebrating again a year from last week?”

Sean laughed and took Billy’s hand. “Fuck you, sweetheart. Not every day that a guy comes out of a coma.”

Billy squeezed Sean’s hand. Sean didn’t get sentimental very often and it would probably be negated or brushed off before the night was over, but he wanted to savor this moment for all it was worth.

He hoped he could hold onto the memory long enough to record it on his calendar.
