Other than sports (baseball & then hockey), which kind of counts, but I'll ignore for this. I first discovered fandom when I was watching OZ in the early 2000's. Television Without Pity had a page with forums and I would read everything on the OZ forum- I didn't have HBO at the time, so when I wasn't watching the available DVDs, I'd read the synopsis on the site & then hop over to the forum. One day, there was a link to something called oz_magi which was on LiveJournal at the time and I discovered the wonderful world of fanfic. I thought it was a little weird, but I got into some of the non-canon pairings and devoured all the stories that were there, and in my mind, I started crafting what I would wish for if I was to participate in the exchange. In July 2006, I joined LiveJournal and jumped into the OZ fanfic community soon after. I'm not sure what everyone initially thought of me because I didn't write for the number one pairing so a lot of what I did was a hard sell. Through the years, I branched out & found other shows to play with.
I was born & raised in St Louis, so if I don't say the Cardinals for baseball, I get excommunicated. LOL. In baseball, my teams are Cardinals, Dodgers, Tigers, and Pirates. In hockey, the Blues are the number one team with the Devils a close second. I have a lot of hockey teams I like though. When you have a team with a Stanley Cup drought that lasted as long as ours did, you learn to have backups. I'm a big fan of women's hockey too and am looking forward to watching the US & Canada in the Olympics.
I understand the part about making sure you are on good terms with the team from your upbringing. (The AL Central Cellar-Dwellers are still my team, despite usually being the AL Central Cellar-Dwellers.)
I have seen my team win the Cup several times, which is nice, but they're not going to be in contention this year (or several more).
I'm definitely looking forward to the women's hockey tournament. I'd love for something as lucrative as the NHL to be available for a professional women's league. (The PWHPA and the PHF, hopefully, can reconcile and they can all get the support they need to have a viable league with all of the stars that would bring the viewership and the money to make it possible.)
I think, unfortunately, the PWHPA and PHF, are still a ways off from reconciling. Which is a shame because it'd be nice to have more teams and more opportunities to see top talent. I don't think the NHL will be any help as far as that's concerned, but I like that ESPN+ is showing the games and that can only help to grow the awareness of the PHF.
Detroit was the local market, yes, where I grew up. (And it's so nice to know that I can call them what they are and someone else understands.)
It is good that both organizations are getting good exposure and deals to have their material covered, even if it's not yet on the main networks. It would be nice if the commentators on this year's Olympic tournament would do good advocacy for a strong professional league, since we have top tier talent all around. (Then again, we've had a number one ranked international football squadron and still can't seem to muster up enough support for the NWSL to put it on major networks.)
I can't recall if we talked about this already, but have you seen Leverage: Redemption? If so, what are your thoughts? (With the caveat that I still have a few eps to go.) If not, favorite Leverage character moments or eps?
Favorite Leverage character: Eliot, followed by Parker & Hardison
It's been so long since I've seen the show. I always enjoyed it when they were up against the guy who played Badger on "Firefly". There was an episode, might have been at a wedding where Eliot was pretending to be a chef, that was fun. And really everything involving Parker who is a delight to watch.
Romance is my go-to when I just need a break- some Regency type and lately a ton of hockey M/M series. Fun thing about getting started with hockey M/M romance from Amazon. Most of them are part of a series (they can stand-alone, but you can go back and see how so-and-so got together in this and here's our preview for the next when a background character from this novel finds love...) or once you complete the series you can get started with this other series. I've read about 30 of them over the past two years. It's hockey and romance- what's not to love.
Cool. (Mine is urban fantasy and mystery). I have never read any m/m hockey romances (I know shockingly little about hockey for growing up around the Pittsburgh area).
I actually write m/m romance under the name Jana Denardo
