Well, I've been back two days, so I guess I'd better say a teensy bit about my vacation. I had a very nice time and I got lucky enough to pick a weekend when the weather was lovely. I've not taken a solo road trip before so that was quite the experience and I picked a destination within two hours of my home because I wanted to get away, but I have about a two hour tolerance for driving before I have to stop and do something, so Springfield was a good spot to go.
It almost didn't happen as I was hit with some weird leg/hip pain the night before and could barely walk. Two Aleve, some well-timed exercise, and the promise of half an hour in the hot tub got me through it. If I was in the least bit of pain after my exercise class, I would have stayed home.
I spent a lot of time in the hotel room, reading, writing, and watching movies. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have a Pay Movie option with the TV, but I did catch "Tag" on HBO and found it to be really delightful. I skipped the Super Bowl for the most part, but I did glance at the score from time to time.
For sightseeing, I went to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. It was ok. I might have enjoyed it a little more except I started out seeing a movie where they were simulating the Civil War right in the room (I'm not big on the loud noises, bright flashing light aspect, so it was a little unnerving). Some of the museum felt dumbed down a bit. I liked both the Truman Museum (here in Missouri) and the George W. Bush Museum, which I saw last June, a lot better.
I also got to walk through the Dana-Thomas House which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was gorgeous. He had a blank check to work with and he designed most every aspect of the house from the furniture to the lighting fixtures to the windows. There were only three people living in the house when it was built and they had 12,000 square feet between the three of them. And the house had sixteen different levels within it. It was a crazy, beautiful place.
And now I'm back and work is driving me completely bonkers. I'm just going to have to make my next getaway a longer one.
